Exercise Theory
The Exercise Theory (ET) course is the prerequisite course for every Nova Scotia Fitness Association Certification. It is completely online and self-paced, although it is recommended to complete the ET course within 6 to 8 weeks.
Exercise Theory provides the student with the foundations of becoming a fitness professional and includes modules such as anatomy and physiology, movement mechanics, energy systems, basic nutrition and much more. The curriculum is formatted into modules with review questions and short quizzes that will test the participants' knowledge along the way. When ready, students can access the official exam.

Once you have completed the course and are ready to write the exam, you can book an NSFA-approved Procter for the exam time. Exams can be done online and are proctored by NSFA Course Conductors.

Aldona is a senior lab instructor and course conductor in the Human Kinetics Department at St. Francis Xavier University. She has over 25 years of experience teaching courses in: health & wellness, exercise theory, physical activity and fitness principles at STFX. She’s also a certified Group Exercise Leader (GEL) with NSFA, and Fitness Instructor Specialist (FIS) with canfitpro, and teaches a variety of fitness formats and group exercise classes.

How do I become a member of the NSFA?
* Once you pass your ET course you are automatically an Associate Member of the NSFA. To become a Regular Member (Regular membership includes your practice liability insurance plan) you must complete a full certification.
Do I need to have CPR and First Aid before taking Exercise Theory?
* You do not have to have the First Aid & CPR complete to take these courses, but it must be completed before your certification is finalized.
Do I need to complete Exercise Theory before taking other certifications?
* You may register for other modules at the same time as you register for ET. Your full certification will not be finalized until you successfully complete ET.
