Can You Outrun a Donut?: The Surprising Impact of Exercise and Nutrition on Your Waistline, Health, & Performance
Presenter: Jason Karp PhD, MBA
From the time our mothers told us as kids to eat our vegetables, we have known that vegetables are good for us. However, research shows that low cardiorespiratory fitness is such a strong risk factor of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome that not even a healthy diet can diminish the risk. Most people think that body weight and health have a lot more to do with nutrition than to exercise. This controversial and insightful presentation explores the impact of nutrition and exercise on body weight, health, and performance to answer one of life’s most important questions: Can you outrun a donut?
“What Was That?” (Accessible Fitness Instruction for the ‘Hard of Hearing’)”
Presenter: Ian MacVicar, CD, DSS, (PhD)
Hearing loss is one of the fastest-growing health crises in Canada. The Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS, 2016)) found that 19% of Canadians experience a significant hearing loss that interferes with their ability to hear speech. Exercise/fitness classes can be notoriously noisy with reverberant walls, fast speaker voices, often overlayed with loud music. Such environments are immensely challenging for those who have even mild to moderate hearing loss and may discourage them from attending fitness classes, leading to diminished physical and mental health.
The purpose of this session is to provide NSFA instructors with practical guidance on facilitating inclusion of “hard of hearing” (or hearing-impaired) clients within their general land and aqua programs and classes. The session focuses on making fitness instruction accessible for hard of hearing clients (90% of hearing challenges) as opposed to the profoundly deaf (10%) which requires deeper professional knowledge. This presentation provides an overview of the forthcoming NSFA instructor handbook on making fitness instruction more accessible for the hard of hearing community. The presentation provides both an understanding of the impact of hearing impairment on activities of daily living for individual clients, its causes, its prevention - and offers numerous practical modifications to make programs and classes more accessible.

Inclusive HIIT: Designing Workouts for Every Body
Instructor: Amanda Maillet, PT, GEL
This HIIT session showcases how high-intensity interval training can be inclusive, adaptable, and effective for participants with a wide range of abilities, fitness levels, and movement needs. Throughout the class, multiple variations of each exercise will be demonstrated, allowing attendees to see how a single workout can be safely modified or progressed without losing intensity or purpose. Participants will explore how to deliver a HIIT class without jumping or high-impact movements, making it accessible for individuals managing joint concerns, recovering from injury, or simply preferring a lower-impact approach. At the same time, higher-impact and more advanced options will be provided for those seeking greater cardiovascular or muscular challenge. This side-by-side approach highlights how one class can successfully support a diverse group without separating participants by ability.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
· Identify at least three ways to modify common HIIT movements to accommodate varying fitness levels and physical abilities.
· Demonstrate both low-impact and high-impact versions of key HIIT exercises while maintaining appropriate intensity.
· Use inclusive coaching and cueing strategies that empower participants to choose safe and appropriate movement options.
· Differentiate between intensity and impact and explain how a HIIT workout can remain effective without jumping.
· Design a short HIIT interval that offers multiple movement options within a single class structure.

“Stronger Together: Plogging for Healthier Bodies and Cleaner Spaces”
Instructor: Dr. Kelsey Harvey, PhD
“Plogging” combines physical activity such as walking or running—with picking up litter. It’s an excellent way to stay active while caring for the environment. There are many ways to plog: some people use tools like grabbers, while others wear gloves to collect litter. Items can be gathered in bags, buckets, or even carts or wagons, and some participants choose to sort materials into trash and recycling. Plogging can be done as a steady‑state activity (such as continuous walking) or as interval training (running for a set distance, stopping to pick up litter, and repeating). It can take place almost anywhere, from trails and beaches to neighbourhood streets and urban parks.
In this session, participants will learn:
· The history and origins of plogging
· What equipment is needed to lead a plogging program, including costs and where to purchase supplies
· How to safely organize and lead a plogging event
· How to incorporate plogging into different types of physical activities
· How to adapt plogging for a wide range of abilities and intensity levels
