Periodization in Resistance Training- Optimize Performance!

Instructor: Lindsay McFarlane

The theory is simple – we follow a Periodized program that sets goals to optimize performance and results by working in specific cycles. By working in cycles and using Endurance, Hypertrophy and Strength techniques the muscles are continually challenged and the body does not have a chance to adapt. This Strength training class uses a variety of equipment to showcase different phases of exercise. This class is suitable for both beginner and advanced participants.

Course Outcomes:

1. Understanding of Periodization: Participants will gain an understanding of the concept of periodization in resistance training, including its principles and how it can be applied to optimize performance and results.

2. Familiarity with Cycles: Participants will become familiar with the concept of training cycles and how they can be structured to target different aspects of fitness, such as endurance, hypertrophy, and strength.

3. Application of Different Training Phases: Participants will learn various endurance, hypertrophy, and strength training techniques and how to integrate them into their periodized training programs effectively.

4. Muscle Challenge: Participants will understand the importance of continually challenging the muscles through progressive overload and variation in exercise selection, intensity, and volume.

5. Practical Application: Through practical demonstrations and hands-on exercises, participants will gain the skills and confidence to apply periodization principles to their own resistance training programs, regardless of their fitness level or experience.

Overall, the workshop aims to empower participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to design and implement effective periodized resistance training programs that optimize performance and results while minimizing the risk of plateaus and overtraining.

Title: Breathing, the Forgotten Foundation.

Instructor: Ben McDonald

Breathing is often overlooked but is the foundation of life!! As one of the only animals on the planet that can consciously manipulate breathing depth, cadence and mechanics to affect us both physically and psychologically, it's always good to understand the 'why' behind breathing techniques. In this session we will look at how to assess the mechanics of breathing, the bio-chemical aspect of breathing and how to retrain both to affect overall well-being!! Join Ben McDonald for this interactive, practical session that will have you thinking a little differently about how you, your clients and your class participants breathe!!

Chest Deep & Delightful

Instructor: Sylvie Pouliot

Aqua fitness in chest-deep water has some similarities to land-based fitness because you are using the pool floor. That’s where the similarity ends!

AQX aqua fitness instructors utilize aquatic properties and instructional techniques to help you get the most from your aquatic exercise session, without additional equipment! Every move is resisted. You are cooled by the water. Gravitational forces and joint-loading are off-set by buoyancy. Your heart beats more efficiently.

You can work as hard or as gently as you choose – Sylvie will show you how!

Best Practices for Modifying and Progressing Exercises

Instructor: Caitlin Doyle

Unlock the power of exercise modifications in this dynamic session designed to elevate your training arsenal and enhance client outcomes. A trainer's proficiency in adapting exercises through regressions and progressions is a cornerstone skill when catering to diverse populations. Join us as we explore the variables that can influence exercise selection.

You’ll gain insights into the variables influencing regressions and progressions, empowering you to tailor exercises to meet the unique needs and abilities of your clients. From foundational movements to advanced techniques, you'll discover practical tools and strategies for adapting exercises across various modalities and movement patterns.

SPIN STUDIO

Spinning for Good Health

Instructor: Maryann Peacock

Join Maryann for a fun hour of spin and get a good sweat on! She will take you on a journey where you will be sprinting and climbing, all while having fun and spinning to great music.! You will come away with some tips for different drills you can add to your own spin class.

Rock Your Assessments!

How to assess clients more thoroughly to allow for more realistic goal setting!

Instructor Melissa Millar

Knowing what your client needs often goes beyond hearing their stated goals- how do you ensure they can see and feel results from the work they’re putting in or know that what you’re giving them is enough to create positive change?

Do you…

  • know how to do a quick postural assessment? A flexibility assessment?
  • have tools for describing and dealing with obstacles, or for measuring satisfaction with elements of wellbeing such as sleep, self-esteem, mindful eating, & stress management?
  • go beyond weight and BMI and conduct fitness assessments that allow you and your client to establish benchmarks for progress?

An often missed part of the assessment process is language so we’ll also discuss some key phrases and cues for helping the client to think about themselves, and their goals, differently.
